Aberdeen Civic Society Awards 2022

Because of Covid 19 restrictions, it is some three years since the Civic Society has considered properties for its Awards Programme.

The review panel has therefore studied developments from 2019-2023 and started with a list of more than twenty five projects for further consideration. By agreement of the judging panel, this was reduced to a short list of ten over several meetings.

Particular attention was given to renovation projects, some of which had been grant aided by the Aberdeen Heritage Trust. These were:

the restoration of Provost Skene's House

the restoration of the building at the corner of Schoolhill and Harriet Street

the restoration of 11-11a Dee Street, particularly the terracotta panels

the shop front at 217 Rosemount Place

At our final meeting, it was by general consent that the Civic Society Award should be made to the Aberdeen Art Gallery. The building expansion and refurbishment was of particular merit, considering the style of the existing 1885 building and the sculpture court, added in 1901 and 1905. The community has been further served by the ability to display a greater selection of the City of Aberdeen's art collection.

It was further agreed that the following developments should receive a Commendation:

the Craft Studio Retrofit and Extension at Newton Dee

and the restoration of the Victoria Park Fountain
